Oral Cancer Screening in Richardson, TX

A short, careful look at the tissues inside your mouth, throat, and lips during your regular visit. No needles, no extra appointment, and no pressure to add anything you do not need.

What an Oral Cancer Screening Actually Is

When most people hear the phrase Oral Cancer Screening in Richardson TX, they picture something complicated. It is not. It is a few minutes during your hygiene visit when Dr. Korenman looks and feels for anything that does not belong: a patch that has changed color, a sore that has not healed, a lump under the jaw, a rough spot on the side of the tongue. We do this every time you come in for a cleaning.

The reason we bother is simple. Oral cancer is far more treatable when it is caught early, and the early signs are usually painless. A spot you would never notice in the mirror can be obvious to a dentist who has been looking at mouths for more than thirty years. The screening is the cheapest, fastest part of your visit, and it is the part that has the biggest payoff when something is wrong.

If you have been away from the dentist for a few years, this is one of the reasons we encourage you to come back without worrying about a lecture. No shame, no pressure. Just a careful look so you know where you stand.

How Dr. Korenman Performs an Oral Cancer Screening

The visual part comes first. Dr. Korenman checks your lips, the inside of your cheeks, the roof and floor of your mouth, your tongue (top, sides, and underneath), your tonsils, and the back of the throat. Good lighting and a small mirror catch most of what matters. He is looking for color changes, white or red patches, ulcers that have lingered, and asymmetry that was not there last time.

Then comes the hands-on part. He gently feels along the sides of your neck, under your jaw, and around the floor of your mouth for lumps or firm areas in the lymph nodes and soft tissue. This is quick and should not be uncomfortable. If something feels different from your last visit, he will tell you in plain language what he noticed and what it could mean.

If a finding needs a closer look, we have 3D NewTom VG3 cone-beam CT imaging in the office, which lets us see bone and deeper structures mapped in three dimensions when that is helpful. For soft-tissue biopsies or anything outside our scope, Dr. Korenman refers you to an oral surgeon or ENT he trusts. When something is outside our scope, we say so.

Who Should Be Screened and How Often

Every adult patient gets screened at every routine visit. That is the baseline. If you come in twice a year for a cleaning, you get two screenings a year, included with the appointment. You do not have to ask for it and you will not see a separate line item for it.

Some patients carry more risk than others and deserve a closer second look. Tobacco use in any form (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, vaping, chewing tobacco) raises risk meaningfully. So does heavy alcohol use, especially combined with tobacco. HPV is now a leading cause of cancers at the base of the tongue and tonsils, which is why we check the back of the throat carefully even in patients who have never smoked. A lot of sun exposure on the lower lip matters too, especially for people who work outdoors.

If you have noticed something yourself, a sore that has not healed in two weeks, a lump you can feel with your tongue, a hoarse voice that will not go away, a numb spot, or trouble swallowing, please do not wait for your next cleaning. Call and tell us what you are noticing. We will get you in for a focused look.

What's Included With Your Screening at Loveable Smiles

Your oral cancer screening is part of your regular exam with Dr. Korenman. It is not billed as an add-on, and we do not push extra adjunctive devices or rinses on top of it. What you get is an experienced set of eyes and hands, taking the time to look carefully and tell you what they found.

If everything looks normal, we tell you that, and you are on your way. If we see something worth watching, we photograph it, note the size and location in your chart, and ask you to come back in two weeks so we can compare. Many spots are harmless and resolve on their own. Tracking them is how we tell the difference between something benign and something that needs further evaluation.

If a referral is needed, Dr. Korenman calls the specialist’s office himself when it helps, and he calls you that evening to make sure you understand the next step. You also get his direct number so you are not stuck in a phone tree if you have a question over the weekend. Some people call that old-fashioned. We call it the way dentistry should work.

Why a Two-Minute Screening Is Worth Showing Up For

The honest pitch for an oral cancer screening is not dramatic. It is that early detection changes outcomes, and the screening itself costs you almost nothing in time or discomfort. Catching a lesion when it is small usually means a smaller procedure, a shorter recovery, and a much better long-term picture than catching the same lesion six months later.

It also fits into the rest of the care we already do. Pairing the screening with your routine cleaning, your periodic dental exams, and the rest of your family dentistry visits means we are looking at the whole picture, not one tooth at a time. That is how problems get caught early, whether they are decay, gum changes, or something on the soft tissue.

If it has been a while since anyone checked, that is fine. Come in, get a careful look, and find out where you actually stand. We will explain what we see and let you decide what to do next.
